Bees in the showcase (by glass photographed)
Our newest common hobby is beekeeping.

The home of our bees

The hives are our orchard. They were all built by Helmut himself. Here you can see the first three, the next he has with window built. So you can look good, how are the bees, without disturbing them.
Helmut spoke a few years of starting with the beekeepers. 2012 gave him our daughter birthday book "The 1x1 of Beekeeping" (at my suggestion). That was the starting point to implement the years of plan into action. In winter, he then attended the 5-part beekeepers course in Linz, built the bee space and the hives. In April 2013 attracted then the first three bee colonies a. If at the bees something to do, we are helping together forever. In June, the day of the open garden door, we tipped a showcase with a gross and a honeycomb. Three weeks later, the bees had raised a new queen and settled by the showcase in a new home to. In August, we threw the first own honey. It was "goose bumps" pure. It is a very nice experience, if the first honey runs in the reservoir. Then came the feed them up for the winter (taking away their food supply so away) and the Varroa treatment. Owing to many Internet searches and conversations with other beekeepers, we sat down and thyme in flower pot directly under the hives. Allegedly do not like Varroa mites thyme smell. We also replaced some of the water for feeding paste with Bee tea, which has a high proportion of thyme. When Varroa control in early February, we had found a very low Varroa infestation (within 14 days 6 mites 6 bee colonies). As well as it can go. Now spring 2014 we will get 2 bee colonies. Helmut wants from even 2-3 offshoot of the larger nations make the previous year. And after the space home then not enough, we are opening 3 outstanding debts in the closer environment after we responded a few acquaintances, if we could set up a hive even with them. If you experience - by the rapid increase in the colonies - the impression that we want but only with the money honey earn, so we have to make it clear: Of course we want to sell honey (more than 30 kg can not consume in itself), but we also want shall ensure that it is our bees as well as possible. Currently Helmut builds new beehives again, this time from Pine. We try to limit disturbances in their bee life to a minimum, to bring them strong and healthy through the winter and to give them a good start to the new year bees. While we are not striving for organic certification, but want it as much as possible, ecologically beekeepers. June 2014 As already mentioned in the news, our bees are very this year "of traveling". We had now 6 swarms and thus, the bee colones has grown to 14. As it stands, there will be the first honey in 2014 in June. November 2014: Meanwhile - up to the varroa treatment in the winter - the work with the bees completed in 2014. It was a difficult year bees. 1. Weather: cold to the wrong time - hardly bee flight for pollination, despite good flowering; unfortunately also many fruit pests 2. honey yield: very moderate 3. Varroa mite: generally very high infestation. One can only hope that the varroa treatment in the cold, broodless time makes an impact and the Bees can spend the rest of the winter reasonably free of mites. February 2015: Helmut was busy again. The pictures below show our new bees showcase for three frames, in the form of a farmhouse.
